A Tale of Two Stories: Balogun's Suspension and Belgium's Victory
The FIFA World Cup round of 16 match between the U.S. and Belgium took an interesting turn when FIFA lifted USA forward Folarin Balogun's one-match suspension, which was initially given for a controversial red card in the World Cup round of 32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This decision led to Belgium appealing and criticizing the timing of the reversal.
However, Belgium coach Rudi García took a different approach, separating the controversy from his interaction with Balogun. Before and during the match, García made it clear that he didn't blame Balogun for the situation, and ultimately, Belgium emerged victorious with a 4-1 win, advancing to the quarterfinals.
In a show of respect, García and Balogun spoke briefly after the match. García expressed his appreciation for Balogun's intention to talk to him, saying: '[Balogun] came to talk to me. I really liked that. It is not his fault. He is not the one to blame. That's what I told him. I really appreciate the intention that he came to see me. I appreciate this player.'
The conversation between García and Balogun was seen as a classy move, especially given the circumstances surrounding the match. Balogun had started for the U.S. in the defeat, which saw Belgium's players feeling a sense of responsibility to address the lifted suspension.
The initial lifting of Balogun's suspension was based on Article 27 of FIFA's disciplinary code, allowing for the suspension to be overturned and for Balogun to be put on red-card probation instead. This decision was made after the USA could not appeal the initial red card.
Balogun led the United States in goals with three during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, showcasing his skills on the field despite the controversy surrounding his suspension.
