For the first time, the Canadian men's national team has advanced to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. This milestone was achieved after a thrilling 1-0 victory over South Africa in the round of 32 on Sunday.
The decisive goal was scored by Stephen Eustáquio two minutes into stoppage time in the second half, securing Canada's first-ever win in a knockout stage match.
Canada's Round of 16 Opponent
Canada will face the winner of the round of 32 matchup between the Netherlands and Morocco in the round of 16. The match is scheduled to take place at Houston Stadium on Saturday, July 4, at 1 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.
Potential Quarterfinals Opponents
If Canada emerges victorious in the round of 16, it will have four potential opponents in the quarterfinals: France, Germany, Sweden, and Paraguay. Germany will face Paraguay on Monday, while France will take on Sweden on Tuesday.
France and Germany are currently ranked second and 12th, respectively, in FIFA's rankings. A quarterfinals match for Canada would be held at Boston Stadium on Thursday, July 9, at 4 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.
Semifinals Possibilities
There are eight possible opponents for Canada in the semifinals, including the USA. The other potential opponents are Portugal, Croatia, Spain, Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Belgium, and Senegal.
If Canada reaches the semifinals, the match will take place at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 14, at 3 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.
No More Home Games for Canada
Canada will not play any more matches in its home nation. This opportunity was lost when Switzerland defeated Canada in the final match of Group B play, which would have allowed Canada to play its round of 32 and round of 16 matches in Vancouver.
The last match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to take place in Canada will be in the round of 16.
