Cristiano Ronaldo's International Future Uncertain
Following Portugal's 2-1 victory over Croatia at Toronto Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo's international career has become a topic of discussion, leaving fans wondering if he has played in his final FIFA World Cup.
Portugal's advancement to the Round of 16 to face Spain has overshadowed the uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo's future, with the star player providing an update on his plans.
Ronaldo's Retirement Plans
Cristiano Ronaldo has not made any decisions regarding his international career after the win over Croatia on Thursday, stating that he will decide after the tournament.
"I don’t make reckless decisions," Ronaldo said after Portugal's win over Croatia on Thursday. "I will decide after the tournament, not now."
At the club level, Ronaldo is contracted with Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr until June 2027, but his international future remains uncertain.
A Potential Seventh World Cup Appearance
Ronaldo has not ruled out playing in the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Morocco, and his native Portugal, with Portugal coach Roberto Martinez tipping his star striker to play in a record-extending seventh World Cup.
"No one should doubt that," Martinez told Cadena Ser radio. "He's earned it."
Ronaldo's Potential Record-Breaking Appearance
If Ronaldo decides to participate in the 2030 FIFA World Cup, he will be 45 years old, and would be chasing history, as Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary currently holds the record as the oldest player to ever feature in a FIFA World Cup, having played at 45 years old.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup marks the 100-year anniversary of the very first World Cup, with FIFA announcing that the event will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain across three continents.
