Historic Misstep for Egypt Defender
In a turn of events that will be remembered for the wrong reasons, Egypt defender Mohamed Hany has become the first player in World Cup history to have two own-goals in the same tournament, a record that adds to the complexities of his team's campaign.
The unfortunate incident occurred during a free kick by Australia midfielder Aiden O'Neill in the 55th minute on Friday, which went off Hany's head and into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 in their round of 32 match.
Just minutes before this incident, Hany was involved in a collision with Australia midfielder Connor Metcalfe as they both went for the ball near the net. The Egypt defender remained down on the field, prompting immediate concern from his teammates, who signaled for help.
Hany was tended to for several minutes, apparently for a possible concussion, before being allowed to continue playing. Medical personnel were on standby with a stretcher but it was not needed.
This own-goal is Hany's second in the tournament, following another in Egypt's 1-1 draw against Belgium in the group stage.
For Australia, this match marks their third appearance in a World Cup knockout match. Previously, they were shut out by Italy 1-0 in 2006 and lost to Argentina 2-1 in 2022, with their only score in the latter being an own-goal.
