Dramatic Turnaround in Atlanta
England pulled off a stunning comeback against DR Congo at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, securing a 2-1 victory and a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 for the third consecutive tournament.
The match began with DR Congo taking the lead through a goal from left winger Brian Cipenga, who managed to sneak the ball past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and into the net.
DR Congo continued to apply pressure and nearly doubled their advantage before the halftime break, but England slowly gained momentum in the second half.
Harry Kane eventually broke through for England in the 74th minute, scoring the equalizing goal and setting the stage for a thrilling finish.
With the match seemingly headed for extra time, Kane struck again 11 minutes later, becoming the first English player to score twice in a World Cup knockout match since Gary Lineker vs Cameroon in 1990.
England will now face Mexico in the round of 16 on Sunday, July 5 at Mexico City Stadium, looking to build on their hard-fought victory over DR Congo.
