Disappointment Strikes Again for Germany
The German national team is no stranger to disappointment, but that doesn't make their early World Cup exit any less painful. Despite being a traditional soccer heavyweight with hopes of a fifth World Cup title, Germany's campaign was cut short after a loss to Paraguay on penalties.
A Familiar Feeling of Defeat
Germany managed to survive the group stage for the first time since their World Cup win in 2014, but the consolation is little after being eliminated in the first knockout game. As Germany captain Joshua Kimmich expressed, 'We messed it up,' reflecting on the team's performance after the match in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Kimmich, who also struggled to find explanations for the team's group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, shared his thoughts on the team's expectations and the reality of their situation. 'As a child, when you watched the national team during tournaments, it was always semifinals, finals, or world champions. There was always lots of success. You grew up with that, cheering them on,' the 31-year-old Kimmich said, apologizing for the team failing to meet expectations.
Kimmich took responsibility for the team's failure, stating, 'All of us who were on the pitch should feel that, rather than looking to blame someone else. We blew it,' as reported by dpa.
Coach Under Fire
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann faces criticism for his decisions, particularly the recall of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from international retirement. Neuer, 40, failed to justify his inclusion and was at fault for Ecuador's winning goal in the last group game. Neuer simply stated, 'I gave it my all.'
Nagelsmann also faced criticism for not playing forward Nick Woltemade until extra time was looming against Paraguay. Woltemade was among three players who missed in the penalty shootout. The decision to start forward Deniz Undav against Paraguay did not pay off, as he was unable to add to his three goals and two assists from his first two games as a substitute.
A Shocking Loss
The loss to Paraguay was a major shock, with few German fans familiar with the Paraguayan players before the match. Germany had been looking forward to a likely Round of 16 meeting with France. As Neuer said, 'You have to beat such a team. That’s a fact when you want to measure yourself against teams like France.'
Nagelsmann has vowed to stay on as coach despite the criticism. Germany team director Rudi Völler expressed his support, stating, 'I’m still convinced that he’s probably the right one to continue. It’s not only up to me.'
The disconnect between the German team's hopes and reality was highlighted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's social media post, 'What a match, @DFB_Team! You thrilled our country with your commitment and team spirit at this World Cup. We’re proud of you.' The post was met with mockery, with many users asking 'which match' he was referring to, and the phrase began trending.
FDP politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann responded to Merz's post, writing, 'I honestly don’t know which was worse. The match or this analysis.'
