Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands coach following the team's worst-ever World Cup finish, and the search for a new manager is underway.

Netherlands Coach Resigns After Historic World Cup Failure

Ronald Koeman has relinquished his role as head coach of the Netherlands men's national team in the wake of the country's worst-ever World Cup performance, which culminated in a round of 32 elimination.

Historically, the Netherlands has consistently reached at least the round of 16 in every World Cup it has participated in, but this streak was snapped when the team lost to Morocco in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at Monterrey Stadium.

Koeman's tactics against Morocco, which included a switch to a back five, have been widely criticized for deviating from the traditional Dutch philosophy of attacking football and total football, leaving many, including Thierry Henry, perplexed.

"I was really surprised because the Netherlands doesn’t usually play this way, but it’s clear that Koeman had a different vision," the World Cup-winner said.

Zlatan Ibrahimović was scathing in his assessment, placing the blame for the defeat squarely on Koeman's shoulders.

"It’s always sad to see somebody lose. But I think this loss is on Koeman because I didn’t recognize this Dutch team," Ibrahimović said.

"And he lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity," Ibrahimović continued. "And that makes me angry. Lose with your identity, and try always with that. That’s who you are. That’s who you represent."

As the Netherlands embarks on a new chapter, the focus shifts to finding a manager who can lead the team to success in Euro 2028 and restore the nation's football pride.
