New Era for US Soccer
In the wake of a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, the U.S. Soccer Federation is shifting its focus to the future, announcing the appointment of former LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo as the head coach of the country's Under-23 squad for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Cherundolo's Impressive Credentials
The 47-year-old Southern California native boasts an impressive resume, having won an MLS Cup, a Supporters Shield, and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup during his tenure as LAFC coach from 2022-25. Cherundolo's overall record with the Black and Gold stands at 106W-55L-32, and he also led the team to another MLS Cup final in 2023 and qualified them for the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup.
A Proven Winner and Talent Developer
U.S. Soccer COO Dan Helfrich, who led the coaching search, praised Cherundolo, saying "Steve Cherundolo has been a proven winner, an elite talent developer, and a great ambassador for American soccer."
A New Chapter for US Olympic Soccer
The US U-23s' best finish at the Summer Games came in 2000 under the late Clive Charlies, Cherundolo's college coach at the University of Portland. The team reached the quarterfinals at Paris 2024 and has automatically qualified for the 2028 event as the host nation.
Opportunities for Success
While only eight nations have won the men's World Cup, the Olympics have seen a more diverse range of winners, including Mexico, Cameroon, and Nigeria. The 2028 tournament, featuring just 12 teams, presents a chance for the US to make a mark, and the possibility of recruiting senior squad players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, or Chris Richards could bolster their chances.
A Critical Platform for Growth
According to Helfrich, "The 2028 Olympics present a critical platform to develop our next generation of players, and further engage our passionate fan base as we pursue an Olympic medal at home."
