United States Falls Short in Round of 16
The United States men's national team's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to a close with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium at Seattle Stadium on Monday, a result that echoes the team's past struggles in advancing beyond the round of 16.
Belgium drew first blood in the 9th minute when Charles De Ketelaere scored with a tap-in from inside the box, setting the tone for the match.
The U.S. equalized through a direct free kick by Malik Tillman in the 31st minute, but their joy was short-lived as Belgium responded with another goal from De Ketelaere just two minutes later.
A mistake by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 57th minute allowed Belgium to capitalize and extend their lead, with Freese losing control of the ball while attempting to clear it from outside the box.
The match was put beyond doubt in the 92nd minute when Romelu Lukaku, who came on as a substitute in the 67th minute, scored Belgium's fourth goal. This brings Lukaku's international goal tally for Belgium to 93.
The U.S. team's World Cup run included victories over Paraguay and Australia in the group stage, followed by a loss to Türkiye. They advanced as the winner of Group D and defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 before facing Belgium.
This exit marks the U.S. team's inability to advance past the round of 16 since 2002, when they defeated Mexico 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals. It also mirrors their finish at the 1994 World Cup, which the U.S. hosted.
Belgium will proceed to the quarterfinals, where they will face Spain, who secured their spot with a 1-0 win over Portugal in Dallas on Monday.
