Historic Feat: Messi Sets Record with Seven Consecutive World Cup Goals

Lionel Messi becomes the first player to score in seven straight World Cup matches, extending his record with his 19th goal in Argentina's group stage finale against Jordan. The Argentine legend now has 123 international goals.

Breaking Records

In a remarkable display of skill and consistency, Lionel Messi etched his name in the history books by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games, further solidifying his position as one of the all-time greats. This achievement came as Argentina faced Jordan in their group stage finale on Saturday night.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 80th minute when Messi scored on a free kick, showcasing his mastery over the set piece. After being fouled just outside the penalty box, Messi's low, precision kick split two Jordan defenders and found its way into the left corner of the net.

This goal marked Messi's 72nd career goal from a free kick and his 12th for Argentina, underlining his proficiency from dead-ball situations. With 123 international goals in 202 appearances, Messi now stands second in the all-time scoring list, behind Cristiano Ronaldo's tally of 145 goals.

Prior to this match, Messi was among an elite group of three players who had scored in six consecutive World Cup games, sharing this distinction with French striker Just Fontaine and Brazilian great Jairzinho. By entering the fray in the 60th minute for Lautaro Martinez, who had earlier scored from a penalty kick, Messi demonstrated his ability to impact the game from any point.

A Testament to Enduring Excellence

Messi's inclusion in the match, despite Argentina already securing the top spot in Group J and Jordan being eliminated from the knockout stage, highlighted his relentless pursuit of excellence and his commitment to contributing to his team's success at every opportunity.
