Breaking Down the Barrier: USA's Long-Awaited Knockout Stage Victory
After a 24-year wait, the United States men's national team has finally achieved a knockout stage win at the men's FIFA World Cup, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in a round of 32 match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
This significant win marks the U.S. team's first knockout stage victory since 2002, when they beat Mexico 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals in South Korea, and only their second knockout stage win ever.
Striker Folarin Balogun made history by opening the scoring for the U.S. in the 45th minute, despite being called offside earlier in the match. He is now among the elite group of American players to have scored three goals at the World Cup, joining notable figures such as Landon Donovan, Bert Patenaude, Clint Dempsey, and Brian McBride.
The U.S. team faced a challenge when Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute, leaving them with 10 men on the field. However, they managed to secure the insurance goal they needed in the 82nd minute, thanks to a clinical free kick from midfielder Malik Tillman.
The U.S. will now advance to the round of 16, where they are set to face Belgium at Seattle Stadium on Monday, July 6, in a rematch of their 2014 FIFA World Cup round of 16 encounter in Brazil.
