Spain's World Cup Awakening
The World Cup stage has finally been set ablaze by Spanish teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who announced his arrival with a goal just 10 minutes into his first start, as Spain emphatically defeated Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta on Sunday.
Yamal's impressive display not only marked him as the eighth-youngest scorer in World Cup history, but also eased Spanish nerves following a surprise 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in their opening game. His goal was a result of a low cross that he slid in to touch home at the far post.
"The first game wasn’t really us, it was different, but now we’ve arrived, and we’re going for more," Yamal said, reflecting on the team's performance. His goal sparked a flurry of first-half goals, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring two more close-range scores in the 21st and 24th minutes.
Yamal's strike saw him join an elite group of players, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane, who have all made impressive starts to the tournament. "I’ve always dreamed of being at a World Cup, and being able to score in my first match as a starter is a dream," he said.
"I watched the last World Cup from a classroom so being able to score here with my mum and my family in the stands is a dream come true," Yamal added, highlighting the significance of the moment. The Barcelona winger is already considered one of the world's top players and played a crucial role in Spain's European Championship win in 2024.
A Star is Born
Yamal's impressive display was a welcome relief for Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who had been facing questions about the player's fitness following a hamstring injury. The 18-year-old's goal sparked a dominant performance from Spain, with Oyarzabal's two goals and an own goal from Hassan Altambakti completing the 4-0 rout.
