US Men's Soccer Team Reaches World Cup Round of 16 Amidst Controversy
The US men's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, advancing to the World Cup round of 16, but the triumph was marred by a contentious red card issued to Folarin Balogun in the 64th minute.
The incident occurred when Balogun stepped on Bosnia and Herzegovina center back Tarik Muharemovic's ankle while challenging for the ball, and although the initial call did not result in a red card, a VAR check subsequently led to the ejection of the USA star forward.
The sports world was stunned by the decision, with reactions pouring in from various athletes, including NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Caleb Williams, as well as future Pro Football Hall of Famers JJ Watt and Jason Kelce.
Basketball Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and New York Knicks standout Josh Hart also shared their thoughts on the matter, while FOX Sports soccer analyst Alexi Lalas pointed out an inconsistency with the VAR decision by comparing it to a similar play involving Lionel Messi earlier in the World Cup.
Soccer broadcaster Ian Darke believed the play warranted a card but not a red one, and on a separate note, NBA icon LeBron James praised Balogun for using his iconic silencer celebration after scoring a goal earlier in the match.
